Warsaw University developed a new UV femtosecond pulse laser

The miniature UV femtosecond pulse tripler developed by the University of Warsaw is three times more efficient than its predecessor but has only a fingertip shape. The improvement in laser efficiency is due to the global optimization of the frequency conversion process from the infrared to the ultraviolet band.

Although the advanced laser technology has been able to cover a wider spectral region, but about 300nm UV laser is still difficult to achieve, in particular, to create high-intensity short-pulse UV laser is even more difficult. Often, scientists convert near-infrared laser pulses to ultraviolet laser pulses through a nonlinear frequency converter. However, the adjustment of the inverter is extremely complicated, and its conversion efficiency is only about 10%.

Researchers at the University of Warszawa have developed a miniature tripler with conversion efficiencies in excess of 30%, focusing a single laser through a cascaded second-order frequency doubler to produce a 246 fs UV pulse. By designing a three-dimensional model of the propagation of a focused broadband optical field in both nonlinear and birefringent media, the design of this ultra-small and highly efficient inverter can be realized.

Researchers have developed open source simulation software called "Hussar" that allows users without design experience to accurately simulate the propagation of multiple laser pulses.

Tomasz Kardas, a simulation software developer, said: "Once we have defined the parameters of the input pulse, such as pulse energy, duration, and spatial beam profile, the software can search for the best non-linear crystal thickness, beam size, To our surprise, we set up the laser according to the design indexes searched out by the software and measured its performance. According to the experiment, the UV pulse is almost the same as the simulation result. The degree of agreement between the experiment and the simulation result is in the nonlinear optics Is quite rare. "

Increasing the triplet efficiency above 30% is just the first step in our research. Researchers are trying to keep the volume of the device shrinking. The currently used triplexer is not a one-piece component, or a combination of many components in the lab.

Pawel Wnuk, one of the designers of triplex frequency multipliers, said: "In fact, the one-inch metal support is the largest part of the overall device in all components, so the total volume of the triplex prototype is much larger than in the past The design is a thousand times smaller. "
