Learning from the Cobra, this heat-sensing film allows the robot to learn “God Evasion”

Humans have agile reactions to the external environment, but robots with reinforced steel are relatively insensitive. Having them detect human proximity often requires complex sensors. However, scientists now learn from the cobra and use thermo-sensitive films to sense subtle changes in temperature. If robots can use this technology, they will be able to accurately locate the survivors in the rubble of the disaster area in search and rescue in the future.
The technology was developed jointly by Raffaele Di Giacomo and his colleagues from the Zurich University of Technology. The heat-sensing film they created is made of pectin, which is transparent and flexible and can be directly attached to the surface of mechanical parts. Pectin is generally found in the cell walls of higher plants and is rich in acidic polysaccharides. In plants, it binds to ions and enzymes. Learning from the Cobra, this heat-sensing film allows the robot to learn “God Evasion.” To create a heat-sensitive film “skin” for the robot, first put the pectin solution into the mold, and then add the calcium chloride solution and vacuum it. It is dehydrated until it becomes a transparent film. To test the effectiveness of the heat-sensing film, Giacomo's team heated a plush teddy bear to 37 degrees Celsius and monitored the teddy bear with a thermal imager to ensure that it remained constant throughout the test. “We placed the Teddy Bear 1 meter away from the heat-sensing film for 20 seconds and then removed it. Then we tested it at 0.6 meters and 0.4 meters from the film. The results showed that the film did sense Teddy. The presence of the bear, at 1 meter, showed that the teddy bear was the size of a rabbit, according to Giamcomo. Learning from Cobra, this heat-sensing film allows robots to learn “God Evasion.” Giacomo said the technology is not yet mature. However, the ions in the film can sense temperature changes. If they cover the whole body of the robot, the robot can have a 360-degree thermal sensitivity.

After covering this "skin", the robot can not only easily walk through the crowd, but also learn "God dodge" the ability to perform more tasks that could not be imagined before. Giacomo said that the pectin film is cheap to make, and in addition it has good ductility, is insensitive to stress and bending, and can be incorporated into artificial skin in the future for temperature sensing.
In addition to these applications, the technology can also be used in surgical repairs in the future to allow patients who have lost their ability to sense the loss of limbs to regain the ability to sense temperature. Giacomo said that in the future, the heat-sensing film can also be directly sprayed or dip coated on the surface of the object, as shown in “Western World”, allowing all items to have heat-sensing capabilities.
