Is the drone and the airport incompatible? Drone Surveying Assistance for Expansion of Airport

Drones and airports are often "incompatible with water and fire," but this metaphor is not appropriate to describe Atlanta's aviation hub. The city has entered into a partnership with 3DR, Autodesk and engineering company Atkins to include the drone survey Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport as part of the expansion plan. The focus of work is on-site scanning using 3DR autonomous data acquisition technology. The drone can capture two-dimensional stitching and three-dimensional spot scanning away from the airliner. In the busiest airport in the world with more than 100 million passengers per year, it is not an easy task for the aircraft to take off and land, without being affected by drones. .

If there is any difficulty, the biggest challenge is how to obtain the approval of the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) regulatory authorities, to know that they are often over-extended. The on-site scan convinced the FAA that mapping drones would not hurt people, but the approval also required drone operators to maintain contact with air traffic control and obey the latter’s controls. This effort should soon be rewarded. Maps and models will help dismantle old buildings and assist in the early design of alternatives. At the same time, 3DR's hope that their experience with FAA licensing will help other commercial drone equipment providers learn. The company recently published a number of learning tools that can help other companies with multiple helpers to quickly scale up similar projects.
