IBM has developed a 60 Gbit / s low-power optical receiver

Recently, at the 2017 VLSI Technology and Circuits Conference, IBM announced that it has developed the first high-speed, low-power optical receiver with a transmission rate of 60 Gbit / s and a single-channel high-speed non-return to zero optical receiver NRZ) receive signal, and equipped with 14nm field-effect transistor, with a large capacity digital clock and data recovery.

Alessandro Cevrero, an IBM engineer, said the 60 Gbit / s received this time in a small CMOS chip is twice as fast as it was before, reducing transmission costs in half. This breakthrough CMOS photonics technology can be applied to the processor or chip, with 9dB / mw sensitivity of power consumption, ideal for high bandwidth connections, high throughput requirements of cloud computing, data centers and so on.

In the optical fiber communication system transmission process, the received signal is generally weak, the receiver should theoretically amplify the signal without damaging the information, and in actual operation, leakage code, error codes often exist. The optical receiver reached a BER of 10-12 during the test, which means that when transmitting 1012 bits of information, only one may be incorrect. Optical receiver does not affect the quality of the normal transmission of information to reduce the great power consumption, so that information transmission has been greatly protected.

In addition, matched optical transmitters are expected to be available next year. Optical transmitter and receiver two devices will form a complementary, composed of a complete CMOS receiver. In future transmission systems, all transmissions over 1 meter in length, the electrical signals are converted to optical signals to carry more information, to improve the efficiency of energy applications, and to provide greater bandwidth. The low power consumption of the CMOS receiver system achieved will be more market-valued than the standard copper interconnect.

Cevrero also said that it is currently developing an optical transmitter designed for transmission rates above 70 Gbit / s and is already in production and is expected to begin measuring in the fourth quarter of 2017.
